Canada is the world's second-largest country with a total area of 9,984,670 km². Comprising ten provinces and three territories, Canada is a bilingual (english, french) and multicultural country. The Yukon Territory lays in the country's far northwest bordering Alaska/USA. It has a population of about 32,000, and its capital city is Whitehorse, with about 23,000 citizen. The territory is named after the 3700km long Yukon-River, which empties into the Bering Sea.
The Klondike Gold Rush was the main event in the Yukon's history. After the discovery of gold became known in 1897, an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 people risked all their belongings, some even their life to reach the Klondike gold fields in the winter and spring of 1897-1898.
The next important event in the Yukon's history was the construction of the Alaska-Highway during the Second World War which, after its badly needed reconstruction by the Canadian Government in the late 1940s, opened up the territory to road traffic which counts today up to 100,000 travellers per year.
The memory of this period, as well as the spectacular scenic wonders and outdoor recreation opportunities, makes tourism the second most important industry. Today, the government sector is by far the biggest employer in the territory, directly employing approximately 5,000 people.
Also well known today is the Yukon for its annual 1000 mile (1600km) dog sled race run in February between Whitehorse, YT and Fairbanks, Alaska. The "Yukon Quest" is known as the 'toughest sled dog race in the world'. (wikipedia.com)
